Take a Pittance of Time...Lest We Forget
On November 11, 1999 Terry Kelly was in a drug store in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada. At 10:55 AM an announcement came over the stores PA asking customers who would still be on the premises at 11:00 AM to give two minutes of silence in respect to the veterans who have sacrificed so much for us.
When eleven oclock arrived on that day, an announcement was again made asking for the two minutes of silence to commence. All customers, with the exception of a man who was accompanied by his young child, showed their respect.
Terrys anger towards the father for trying to engage the stores clerk in conversation and for setting a bad example for his child was channeled into a beautiful piece of work called, A Pittance of Time.

Seems like I shared this with you before, but I'm not certain...it just so happened that I was in Canada a couple of times on Remembrance Day. I was in a meeting one time, and the entire building stopped and a poem was read over the intercom. I thought that was so cool...to know that virtually everyone in the entire country was stopped at that moment. It's definitely an awesome tradition. :)
ReplyDeleteI remember this video. I'm moved to tears every time I see it. My dad was a veteren of WWII, serving 4 years in the European Theater.
ReplyDeleteWhen speaking about his time there, he only talked about the life-long friends that he made in the fox holes and bombed out buildings where they made camp. He kept in touch with a half dozen or so of them throughout his life.
I still correspond with the only remaining buddy from his platoon each year at Christmas time. He's 92 now and he and his wife are just the lovliest people. As each year passes, I wait for their card with anticipation and the hope that it won't be the last time.
Thanks for posting this in honor of those who served. I hope we never forget the courageous men and women who gave their all for us. :~)
Thanks Mandy! It is a nice tradition for sure and this song really helps us remember that it's only a pittance of time compared to what others have done for us!
