Travelling Carnivals. Mama Loves...

I have been off the Mama Loves train for a couple weeks with Julie over at Pontifications of a Twin Mom and I've missed everyone over there!

BUT...I'M BACK!!

As fate would have it, during my visit back home to my little town of Porcupine, ON the Beauce Carnaval was in town.  The what?  Only the most anticipated event of the summer when I was growing up!!!

My bestie at the time and I would spend 5 of the 7 days they were in town riding rides, playing the games, eating the food and gawking at the lifestyles of carny's just walking around.  Now that I am older and wiser, I am SHOCKED that we didn't get into "trouble" and that my mom was brave enough to allow us to hang out there, unsupervised.  You see, this particular Carnival has a reputation for not-so-wholesome activity and EVERY stereotypical thing that may be coming to your mind about "Carney" is in fact true.  Kinda...sorta...Ok, perceived to be true.

I can't begin to explain how much fun I had as a teenager hanging out here in this supercharged, music pounding environment. We'd spend hours riding Every.Single.Attraction. many times over.  We'd "snack" on corn dogs, candy apples, pommes de terres frities (french fries) and candyfloss.  We'd giggle at the carny's who we knew were either sleep deprived, intoxicated, stoned or all three...LOL!  We both spend copious amounts of money on games we knew we'd never win except for those feather clips you'd wear in your hair (you know the ones I am talking about right??  A.K.A. roach clips...LMAO!)  Good times.  No!  GREAT TIMES!

Anywho, I didn't waste any time when my Bestie LeeAnn suggested we take the kids for an evening of Carnival Bliss!  Here are a few of my favorite "snapshots" for your viewing pleasure:

And this is BY FAR the bestest video of Ave & Bryce rockin' it out at the Carnival (just like Mama use to do!)...

I don't think I will allow my babies to roam around the local fair alone despite the fact that THIS MAMA LOVES TRAVELLING CARNIVALS!!

Whatcha loving this week? Go link up!

My Bittersweet Electronic V-Kay...

Ok, so I kinda put myself on a bit of an Electronic Break this last month during my holiday to Florida.  It was bittersweet to be honest.

Not "allowing" myself daily access to email, facebook, google and my blog was "refreshing".  I could almost feel the addiction  need to be constantly connected electronically fade and it was somewhat liberating.  However, I really missed my cyberworld friends and keeping "up" on the daily happenings in their corner of the world.  I also missed some pretty important email communications regarding a committee I sit on and well, that was a bit problematic.  It is evident that the world in which I live in highly depends on me being "connected" (professionally and personally) and I just have to find some balance...

And so, I have returned to my little space here on the W.orld W.ide W.eb and it FEELS GREAT!  I have lots of "catching up" to do and since my jibber-jabber-gotta complain about something-gotta share a totally pointless point of view mindset has had a holiday, you should expect some exceptionally enlightening, outstanding  "rusty" posts in the next few days...LMAO!

Until I can get those creative juices flowing once again, here are some "highlights" of my totally awesome V-Kay!

Ave & Bryce had a ton of fun on their first Easter Egg Hunt!

There were KID POOL TIMES at my parents park so they enjoyed some "water play" on the off times.

They helped Grampa celebrate his Birthday and blow out his candles!

They are my two little "Restaurant Goer's"

They were little socialites as they enjoyed a picnic in the park!

Daddy Dave & I enjoyed a mini Vay-K to Gatorland & Disney World

We finished off our "alone time together" at Medieval Times...An entire post coming soon!
 It was SOOOO Much FUN!

Happy Monday Friends!!

Maybe I Got a Little Martha in Me Afterall? Ave & Bryce's Rooms...

As a follow up to yesterdays post about how I totally rocked Retro Chic for the kids nursery, I think I also totally rocked "Cute-Stylish" when Bryce moved out of their shared bedroom and in to his own.

The dilemma for me was whether to change EVERYTHING or make what we had work.  Since they were only 5 months old and I was still pretty tired and settling into the whole "Mom of twins. I am so excited and blessed.  What have I gotten myself into?!?" phase, I opted to go with what I had and keep it on a shoestring budget.

Bryce's Quiet Time Space
"Retro-Chic-Boy Style"
At a glance...see the frame on the left?  I placed photos from the IVF, first ultrasound,
when we found out their genders & 4 weeks after they were born.  Bryce LOVES to hear
me talk about each picture after his morning nap...so cute!

This is something Daddy Dave says to the kids all the time so I thought it would be
super cute to have it made out of vinyl to stick to the wall.  I also had all the
circles and squares made to give the room some color and "style" LOL!

Bryce "walked" away with about 70% of the Retro Chic Nursery Decor simply because
of the color pallet...it seemed more "him".
I hope he loves the mirror as much as mama & the Lazyboy as much as Dad!

Ave's Quiet Time Space
"Flower Power"

At a glance...see the "hope chest" by the window?  My parents gave one to each of the kids for their 1st Birthday...that's where I keep all the "can't throw it away" stuff...LOL!
One of my Bestie's bought me this crib set before I even got pregnant.  When we found out we were having twins I put it in the closet.   I am so happy I didn't sell it or give it away!
 It became my decorating "inspiration"...

I love this saying and it's so true.  No matter WHAT, we should always
kiss our loved ones goodnight!

I ordered vinyl flowers in different sizes and colors to match the new crib set.
I found that stand up mirror on Kijiji for $20...SWEET!

Ave loves her BEAUTIFUL'S (flowers & bows that go in her hair) so, I had her name made into
an organizer for them.  Coolest thing, they just clip onto ribbons hanging down.

Sadly, I had to remove the Retro Stick Ons, they really didn't "smatch" the cute flower theme.
I had some matching frames and made a little photo collage of her & her brother (mostly her though).
Grandma gave her their old rocking chair and with a few pillows here and there...
VOILA...a new decor was created!

Alright.  I admit.  I am no Martha Stewart BUT man, I LOVE TO DECORATE!

Happy Friday Everyone

I'm no Martha Stewart but I can totally ROCK Retro-Chic...

I am once again linking on up with the  Pretty Much World Famous Writing Workshop with Mama Kat.

Assignment:  Share your favorite part of your child's bedroom.

When I found out I was pregnant I was so excited.  Mostly because Daddy Dave and I were being blessed with a child but following VERY closely behind was the fact that I was going to be able to decorate a Nursery!

If finances allowed and Dave wasn't such a minimalist, I would redecorate every year often.  Since neither is, nor will be my reality, having a baby was my ticket to design...LOL!

When we found out we were having twins and one was a little boy and the other was a little girl, I was even more excited...a million dollar family in one shot BUT my decorating balloon deflated just a tad because I now had to be a little more neutral with the decor. *sigh*

After considering my options and short of having to use a predetermined nursery theme of jungles, Noah's Ark...you know gender neutral patterns, I went  with what I like to call Retro-Chic...

2 cribs, 2 dressers & a lazyboy...
Tight Fit but We Made It Work

Ave's Side of the Room. The funky "stick-ons" are kinda Retro.

Bryce's Side of the Room.  The furniture and "Art Work" is totally Chic Don't You Think?

I LOVE These Letter Pictures

This Would Also Be Part of  the Chic Decor.  LOL!

The focal point of the room was this totally AWESOME Retro mirror!

I also LOVED the babies bedding...

A perfect mix of Retro-Chic in my mind!
If I HAD to pick one aspect of Ave & Bryce's Nursery that I loved MOST...it would be a total tie between the "Letter Alphabet" frames that spelt their names and the huge green, funky mirror!

Daddy Dave and I had so much fun working together to create this sleep haven for our two beautiful miracles.  It was a shame that they only shared the room for a few months before we had to move Bryce to his own room (the constantly woke each other up).  Although,  on the bright side, I did get to redecorate TWO rooms...Fun! Fun! Fun!

Quiet Time... A Gift From ME to YOU!

That's right.  Quiet Time is a Gift From ME to YOU!  What the heck am I talking about?  Bare with me.  Please.  I am about to give TWO gifts today.

The first is to my children, Ave & Bryce.

Everyday, well almost everyday, I give you the gift of Quiet Time.  From 4pm-5pm you head on up to your totally chic-retro-awesome bedroom to have some alone-quiet time.  Nine times out of ten you are super excited about it...there is that one day, every so couple of weeks that you fight "it" and even cry a little but I want you to know it's a "gift" from ME to YOU.

It's become our little ritual.  I change your bums and we head on "up" those 2 storey stairs. Never forgetting to stop and smell the dusty artificial "flowers".  Once we get to your rooms you head to your basket of books and toys and pass them to me one by one and I place them in your bed.  If you ask, AND you ALWAYS do, you get your "suess" and then I dim your lights to a calming glow.  As I walk out of your room I kindly remind you, "Remember this is Quiet Time.  You don't need to sleep but you DO need to be quiet.  Do you understand?"  To which you always reply with a nod of the head.  I shut your door.

50-60 minutes later, I head back on up those stairs and announce "It's FRESH BEAT BAND TIME!" and you both scream your little heads of with a joyful, rested, rejuvenated, "YEAH!!!"  You hand me your toys and books and they are safely returned to their resting spot until the next day.  When we head downstairs you let me hold your hands....sometimes.  You are getting so big and more independent and like to do it "yourself" from time to time. This fills my heart with such pride but a little sadness too.

Why is this a gift you ask?  For two reasons.

#1  You both spent every waking hour together and for the most part, you both get along so well.  In fact, if one of you gets up after a nap before the other, you are often quite "concerned" where the "missing twin" is.  (Truth be told, I love this time because it gives us each Mommy & Bryce and Mommy & Ave time together...alone.)

Anywho, while I will forever nourish and encourage and even INSIST (at times) on your harmonious, loving, brother/sister bond, I also want to make sure that you develop some confidence and security with being apart (for short periods, at least for now).  While it may not seem like it now, this is truly a "gift".

#2  Mommy loves you both so very much.  More than I could ever express in words BUT mommy also needs "quiet time".  I am a much better mom because of it.  I am not sure if you can "feel" it or not but after 1 hour of "us" all having some quiet time, the energy in our home is much more productive & positive (Mommy doesn't seem to yell as much).  Being a more rational, even-keeled mom is truly the best gift I could give to you because that's when I am at "my very best".

Your Welcome.

The Second is to All Other Parents.

I am positive I am not the only person who gives the "gift" of quiet time to their children (and themselves) but if you arn't I STRONGLY recommend considering it.  I can, with all honestly, say to you that my children will have "Quiet Time" until they go to school full time.  It may even continue, well into elementary and most definitely during junior high and high school.  Although I am pretty sure it will be "renamed" by this time...LOL!

I know I risk having "some" judge me for this parenting practise but I know what works for ME (and them too!)  I just can't imagine that ALL parents, especially stay at home mom's, couldn't benefit from 60 minutes of "Quiet Time".  It's not meant to be punitive...not at all.  It's actually meant to be a REWARD for the kids & YOU!

Watcha Talkin' 'bout Willis?  Reward...how you figure?

It's all in the way you approach it.

Parent Reward- Ok, so this goes without saying.  60 minutes of quiet.  H-E-L-L-O!  No further explanation needed.  Period.

Kid Reward- Quiet Time is a HUGE production in my house.  Think Potty Time excitement.  They rarely put up any "fuss" about heading upstairs for quiet time.  We have a ritual (above).  We have a reminder (above).  We have an exciting "time to come downstairs" reward (for lack of a better word).  They ARE truly more rested, centered and ready to re-engage with the rest of the day.  Not only are they getting some much needed "alone time" (Hey! if you need it, they do too!) they are learning to be comfortable with being "alone".

In my humble opinion, Kids DO NOT nor , SHOULD they be entertained every second of every moment they are awake.  From what I have observed in today's parenting "world" it seems that the way in which my generation was raised, you know, using your imagination and self-directed play, is not the "norm" nor accepted way of parenting the little beings of our future.  I disagree.

Alone time=let your imagination entertain you and keep you company=confident, smart, well adjusted children=the bright future of our world.

Dramatic?  Sure.  But I MAY be on to something.

If you think I am and haven't implemented it, you should.  That would be 60 minutes of Quiet Time.

That's my gift from ME to YOU!  Your Welcome.  LOL.

I wish I Could...

Can I get a "It's Mama Kat's Pretty Much World Famous Writing Workshop" time?!?!?!

Assignment:  I wish I could...

I wish I could get my kids to eat one of the most simplest things to prepare and that's not too shabby on the nutritional scale...PEANUT BUTTER!

I had some great "feedback" here on the blog and on my Facebook page regarding my half-ass attempt at giving the kids peanut butter for the first time in their lives.  In the event you missed that, I put together a really rad video montage...it was a TOTAL BUST!

When it came to the "feedback", people sat in one of two "camps".  The ADVICE camp or the LMAO/MY KIDS HATE IT TOO camp.  Equally respected and appreciated, I might add.

Here were some of the comments from the LMAO/MY KIDS HATE IT TOO camp:

OMG those video's almost made me pee my pants laughing! haha! Especially the top one... you're hilarious! - Heather, my real-life scrapbooking bud

OMG Ging! You're so funny!! Kids are adorable! Btw my kids HATE pb!!??- Karen, my hometown bestie

VERY funny...!! Breanna doesn't like peanut butter either..never has.- Chery, my sister

Way too funny.  They are just like Grandma, they do not like Peanut Butter...yeah!- Grandma, my mom

No!  Peanut Butter Kisses from Grampa. - my dad (who loves PB)

Here were some of my wise and wonderful friends comments who sat in the ADVICE camp:

What the hell is fouette? Do I need to ship you some REAL peanut butter? And come on! Put some jelly on it. No one eats peanut butter DRY... on DRY toast. To be fair you really should do the PB&J sandwich with nice, soft bread. Go classic. - Becca, My Sista from Another Mista

LOL...I AGREE with Rebecca!! My God Ging lol. Try the pb&j or you could also try a banana, pb wrap They're pretty good!! - Amanda, my real-life pain in the arse bestie

I totally agree with Rebecca your toast and peanut butter didn't even look good!! Put some jam on it and stop worrying about making a mess!!!LOL - LeeAnn, my real-life hometown bestie

Shout Out: Becca you would totally get along with my gal pals...they already think your RIGHT?!?!  LMAO!

Perhaps they never liked the peanut butter because you tried to give it to them on BURNT toast!!!!!! Wth?? Hahaha! - Raeline, my real-life buddy

Who needs peanut butter toast anyway? Everybody knows it's better in a Reese's Cup! -Melissa, my bloggy world bud (That's the next step BTW!)

With the whole "DIEING FACTOR" off the table and given all the disgust at how I had served it on dry, burnt toast input, I decided to give Peanut Butter another "shot".

I got the SOFT bread out AND some strawberry jam and away I went...

I handed over the "goods"...

And well, I think the video speaks for itself....

Side Note:  You gotta love that I let my kids sit in front of the TV to eat as Yo Gabba Gabba blares!  Yup!  Mother of the year.  Right. Here.  LMAO!

On burnt toast, on soft bread, with jam, without jam....
My Kids DO NOT like Peanut Butter!
(Reese Peanut Butter Cups...Here We Come!  LMAO!)

I made a short little video about the "experience" and wouldn't you know after all that concern and caution...they don't even like PEANUT BUTTER!  LOL!

For some reason, I couldn't add these to my video so I thought I'd post them for your viewing pleasure...they REALLY don't like Peanut Butter.  Who's kids are these anyways?!?!

As I sit here writing this, my mind is running a mile a minute because I just don;t know where the last 2 years have gone?!  My babies are NOT babies anymore.  They turn TWO tomorrow.  WoW!

This song says EVERYTHING I WISH for my children.

Happy 2nd Birthday Ave & Bryce.  Never forget...

My wish, for you, is that this life becomes all that you want it to,
Your dreams stay big, and your worries stay small,
You never need to carry more than you can hold,
And while you're out there getting where you're getting to,
I hope you know somebody loves you, and wants the same things too,
Yeah, this, is my wish.
